For many devotees of Irish music, Paddy O'Brien is the embodiment of the living tradition, one who understands and communicates the essence of Gaelic culture, going beyond technique to the spirit that drives the music. Paddy is regarded by peers as a living library of Irish traditional tunes, having an impeccable memory of thousands of tunes and their names and variations. A grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1994 prompted him to produce the first volume of The Paddy O'Brien Tune Collection, with 500 tunes recorded and printed, with regional variations and historical information.

Consider the Misi-zibi, the Great River: what natural forces took sixty thousand years to shape, we Americans reshaped in three hundred years. Photographer Quinta Scott has documented the progression of the Mississippi River from its source at Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico, with hundreds of stopping points along the way. Ms. Scott will present some of her photos collected in a new book published by the University of Missouri. The book blends 200 dramatic color photographs with text describing the effects of human intervention on the river and its floodplain. No one has ever before attempted such a vast photographic documentation of the Mississippi River, capturing so many sites in all their diversity and complexity. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and autographing. This event is a part of the Water Your Mind: Adult Summer Reading program.

Saturn should still be a spectacular sight as the rings continue to open up. Hosted by Val Germann and cosponsored by the Central Missouri Astronomical Association.
